Communiqué of FPDT, January 5th, 2017
To the social organizations and the people in general
To the media
To the alternative media
With this communiqué, we want to address the recent actions generated in our communities: the vandalism, terrorism, and collective psychosis in consequence of the problems occurring in our country, particularly the ridiculous rise in the price of gasoline creating enormous discontent amongst society whom have responded with protest. However, yesterday choque groups dedicated to beating and looting met these demonstrations with tactics of intimidation. We have repeatedly seen this PRIISTA strategy and it has increased since December 1st 2012. This date marked a new period in our country when Enrique Peña Nieto took power as the President of the Mexican Republic, whose principal characteristics have been repression, criminalization of social protest, imposition of structural reforms and megaprojects, social distractions, and profiting from the necessities of the people.
The Eastern part of the State of Mexico is suffering from the imposition of a megaproject of death—the new international airport of Mexico City—whose socio-environmental impacts have seriously affected the social ties and tranquility of our communities. This has been met with an increase in the organization of the people to defend their dignity, territory, and history. However, it is with great concern that we see the attempts to discredit legitimate protest by provoking confusion to silence and divert the attention of the ferocious robbery being carried out with the increase of the price of gasoline.
It is not the organized people who have participated in acts of vandalism. It is not the people who have intimidated gas stations and shops. It is not the people that have generated this collective hysteria. It is not the people who have imposed the structural reforms and price increases. It is the government of Enrique Peña Nieto that has developed smoke screens to divert the attention away from the real problems that the country suffers because of its bad government.
We outright reject the politics of state terrorism and their strategies to silence, discredit, and criminalize the legitimate organization of the people. Therefore, the people of the Eastern area of the State of Mexico and the Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra (FPDT) distance ourselves from these acts of vandalism and terror. We demand a dignified life free from violence, as well as respect for the decisions of the people. We pronounce ourselves against the price increase of gasoline as a brutal aggression toward the people.
We say no to the price increase of gasoline and to all of the structural reforms that have caused misery and uncertainty, social disintegration and the division of our peoples. We also reject the excessive enrichment of the political and business sectors.
We demand an end to the dispossession and occupation of our territory with highways and tollbooths that will only destroy and disappear our peoples’ communities. We also denounce the corruption that has been implemented to legalize the illegality of this airport megaproject.
